Question: Is it easy to connect an electric cooker?

Replacing and connecting up an electric cooker is a fairly simple job as long as everything is in place to allow for a straight swap. If, however, there is an doubt, you should always get a professional electrician in to do the work for you.

Do I need an electrician to connect my cooker?

Technically, you wont need an electrician for this – it should be quite straightforward to connect/disconnect the cooker yourself. If you are aware of the isolation procedure to disconnect properly, then you should be fine.

Can you plug an electric cooker into a normal socket?

Most of the ovens we sell can be plugged into a normal wall socket with a 13a plug and some ovens have a plug already fitted. If you want to check then look for the data badge on the oven and if the total power is less than 3000 watts then its fine to plug in.

Do all electric cookers need to be hardwired?

Often cookers made in European countries outside of the UK will need hardwiring. Many European models are designed to run on European 16-amp plugs rather than the 13-amp plugs we have as standard in the UK. Larger freestanding cookers are usually rated higher than 3kW and require hardwiring.

Is 6mm cable OK for a cooker?

The cable should be selected to cater for the Maximum load of the circuit, the MCB is selected to protect the cable. You should NEVER do it the other way round. Plain and simple you need a 10mm cable, 6mm is not correct, it may work but may also burn your house down, you take the risk.

Can I install my own gas cooker?

Technically you can install a new gas cooker yourself. They will check the gas lines and ensure that the cooker is safe to operate. Without that inspection, you will be breaking the law. So, it actually makes more sense to get a gas safe registered engineer to install your gas cooker in the first place.

Can electric oven be plugged into a normal socket?

A high degree of electricity is required for ovens to operate. Dont plug your oven directly to a normal sockets, and always consult an electrician before installation, because it varies for all ovens. Most ovens should run on their own separate circuits.
