Can you Overwind a watch?

In most cases, no, you cannot overwind a modern automatic watch. The smart design on these winding mechanisms allow for any excess tension to be released as the spring slips inside of the barrel.

How do you know if a watch is overwound?

You should be able to feel that the crown turns in the anticlockwise direction more easily, and feel and hear the little clicks as the ratchet works. When you feel that the crown stops turning in the winding direction as easily, the spring is fully wound so just let go.

What happens if a watch is overwound?

Overwinding the watch manually is impossible as well. When the mainspring is fully wound, turning the crown of the watch will have no drastic effects on its functionality. This mechanism will, in fact, undo the winding motion happening on the mainspring, thereby keeping the watchs functionality intact.
