Question: What are the three phases of the cycle of violence?

There are three phases in the cycle of violence: (1) Tension-Building Phase, (2) Acute or Crisis Phase, and (3) Calm or Honeymoon Phase. Without intervention, the frequency and severity of the abuse tends to increase over time. Over a period of time there may be changes to the cycle.

Why is it important to break the cycle of abuse?

The most difficult part of an abusive relationship is breaking the cycle of abuse. Victims need to understand that the longer they stay in an abusive relationship, the more violent it can become. To end the cycle of abuse, it means being aware of what the warning signs of abuse are and then safely addressing them.
